Dolly Bakfiets delights customers with improved rain tent
Dolly Bakfiets develops and produces its own brand electric cargo bikes and provides home service. Customers can choose from more than 55 colour combinations and a range of accessories. The most popular accessory is the rain tent, for which Dolly Bakfiets was looking for a reliable supplier. The choice fell on Mennens.

Better meeting customer wishes
Dolly Bakfiets was looking for another supplier for the rain tent in order to better meet customer wishes. Daan Buddingh, co-owner at Dolly Bakfiets, explains: “The previous supplier was often late in delivering the rain tent. This also affected service to our customers. And consumers had different requirements for the rain tent, so we wanted to adapt the accessory accordingly.”
The challenge
The rain tent is a unique accessory, according to Daan: "The rain tent is a load-bearing structure made of sail slats, combined with window foil, mesh fabric and a tarpaulin, which is mounted on the box. The accessory protects the passengers against rain, wind, sun, sand and insects. This makes the rain tent a complex whole. So we looked for a local sailmaker who could help us redesign the rain tent.” Daan continues: “The rain tent is a complicated product because it is a combination of a load-bearing construction of slats combined with tarpaulin, window foil and mesh. The challenge of the improved version was to enlarge the interior space so that larger children can fit in the tent. It is a very iconic part of the cargo bike.”
From model to model Dolly
Bakfiets eventually went with Mennens. Daan explains why: "The Mennens branch in Groningen is particularly good at this, with their own sailmaking facility, with their own team of experienced tent and sail makers." The team went straight to work after the briefing. “Based on our wishes and requirements, they made various models that we tested on our cargo bike. From model to model, we looked at which one best suited the Dolly and our consumers. In doing so, Mennens created a total picture.”
Two new accessories
“I am very satisfied with the end result. The unbridled efforts of the Mennens model makers have resulted in a new rain tent which is very attractive and very user-friendly. Dolly Bakfiets has found its reliable rain tent supplier. Not only that: after this project, we also developed a new box cover together with Mennens, which is now part of the Dolly collection. This box cover has a zip , which the old version did not have and was therefore less versatile to use.”
